Decorate Your Home for Christmas Quickly and on a Budget!

November 27th, 2007

Christmas is coming up fast and before you know it, it will be time to deck the halls with festive Christmas decorations. While nothing looks more inviting than rooms of perfectly adorned holiday items most of us don’t have hours to spend creating them. If you love decorating for the holidays but time is precious here are some Christmas decorating ideas that are quick and easy to create.

Fragrance

The smell of cinnamon gets me in the holiday spirit as soon as I smell it. Just by placing a couple of air fresheners in the wall you will instantly have a “holiday” smell and that will help the ambiance of your home.

Plants

Poinsettias have long been a holiday favorite for adding a quick splash of Christmas color. Instead of just displaying one lone plant try using several plants together to make a beautiful floral arrangement. Place several Poinsettias together in the fireplace when it’s not in use or line the plants along a window sill for a row of holiday blooms.

These plants make cheap and easy Christmas decorations that can be moved and rearranged for a variety of different looks.

Candles Are Beautiful for Every Occasion

When it comes to quick and inexpensive Christmas decorations never underestimate the beauty of a candle. A grouping of dinner candles placed in gold or silver candle holders of varying lengths on a tray makes a great centerpiece for a dining or coffee table. Add some pine cones, cinnamon sticks or Christmas baubles on the tray for an added holiday touch. Love the look of flames but can’t be bothered to light a fire? Place a large arrangement of candles in your fireplace or on your hearth for no-hassle ambiance.

Everyday Items as Decorations

If non-traditional Christmas decorations are more to your liking try converting everyday items into quick and festive arrangements. Choose a sculpted bowl, glass or porcelain work great, and place it on a gold or silver tray. Fill with like colored fruits of different sizes. Great combinations are pomegranates and cranberries or a mixture of oranges, tangerines and kumquats. Soften the look with sprigs of holly or other festive greenery. Accent the tray with gold Christmas balls and you have a stunning centerpiece in minutes.

Traditional Christmas Decorations

Tradition is a big part of the holiday season and even the most modern decors will likely benefit from tried and true standards. Ribbon and bows are safe favorites that require very little effort on your part but using them in unexpected ways adds a unique twist on these Christmas decorations. Use bows, either handmade or store bought, and ribbon as festive tie backs for curtains. To quickly dress up your dining table why not turn the back of your chairs into Christmas gifts? Wrap one piece of ribbon horizontally around the back of the chair and another piece vertically. Have the pieces meet and overlap as you would on a boxed gift. Add a large bow where the two pieces meet to finish off the look.

Christmas Lights

Just by throwing a couple of strands of lights up makes a big difference. It will make you feel in the holiday spirit and lights do not have to be placed perfectly. When it gets dark and you turn your lights on they are guaranteed to look beautiful. A stand of lights can be bought for a buck or two. So throw out a couple strands and you will feel in the holiday spirit.

Great Gift Ideas For Winter Sports Enthusiasts

November 27th, 2007

It’s no surprise that winter sports are popular around Christmas time, with many areas of the country just minutes or hours from great skiing during this time of year. But what do you get the person in your life that’s crazy about skiing or snowboarding? Here are some excellent gift ideas that are sure to please the winter sports enthusiasts in your life:

It’s not easy to buy someone a new pair of skis, boots or even clothing since it’s difficult to know what size they wear. Instead of the types of gifts that require proper sizing, consider gifts that will surely be used and won’t be brought back to the store because they don’t fit. One excellent gift idea is a lift pass to their favorite ski area. All you need to do is find out where they ski. You’ll find most ski destinations offer ski or lift passes to purchase easily online. Ski goggles are also a gift that will surely be appreciated and used by the recipient. Ski goggles are an easy gift to size as well, since goggles are usually a “one size fits all” type of item. There’s a wide range of ski goggles, including sexy and sleek versions that will provide any skiier with a comfortable, clear and safe experience for their eyes while on the slopes. You may also consider a helmet, which is only available in small, medium and large sizes, so it’s quite easy to pick the right size, as long as you have an idea of the size of the recipients head. A helmet is a gift that you can feel great about, since it has the potential to keep your loved one safe and may even save their life.

Your loved one may enjoy listening to Beethoven while swooshing down the slopes, if so, then consider getting them one of the new wireless audio kits now available. These kits will work with their MP3 player and allow them to use wireless headphones that fit snugly inside of their helmet or cap. An iTunes gift certificate would go well with this gift, or even a new iPod.

More great and economical ideas for skiiers include gloves, ski caps and socks. Gloves are a good choice since they are generally available in set sizes like small, medium and large or men’s and women’s. Ski caps are a nice idea for skiiers who don’t wear helmets and they’re available in a huge range of styles, colors and fabrics. You’ll surely find one that fits the personality of the recipient. You don’t want to forget the socks. Yes, it may seem boring to some people, but thick, cozy winter socks are a practical gift for any skiier or snowboarder, that they’ll appreciate whether on the slopes or off.

Perfect Stocking Stuffers

Gift certificates to an outdoor or sporting goods store are a fantastic gift idea for anyone who is in need of some new gear. This way, they can get the perfect size. Gift cards also fit perfect in a card or stocking. Don’t forget accessories either. There are many small and low cost accessories that any skiier or snowboarder will be able to make use of. Consider ear warmers, earmuffs, scarves, headbands, ski wax, lanyards, GPS devices, weather radios, watches or sunglasses.

Family Christmas Activities That Create Memories For A Lifetime

November 27th, 2007

Christmas quickly approaches and vacation time for children as well. We therefore wonder how we are going to entertain our children during the Christmas holidays.

Christmas holidays are the best moment to share activities between adults and children.

The first of these Christmas activities is to get back into the mood for the magic and the festive spirit of Christmas by visiting shopping malls organizing beautiful Christmas windows; which are an eternally renewed delight for the children and their parents.

Some shopping malls are also organizing Christmas stores consisting of a path to the lighting, Christmas decorations, displayed scenes from Christmas movies, train sets and toys simulating real situations; static or interactive decorations as a fire truck and fire fighters helping the victims of a fire or the express of the King’s Cross railway station platform 9-3/4 bringing Harry Potter and his friends at Hogwarts.

A little further on, after seeing Rudolph surrounded by elves and goblins relaxing on a fairy forest, we enter in the fantastic house of Barbie; which contains 35 rooms decorated for Christmas. Do not disturb her, she is hosting a Christmas party.

Another three steps and we will enter in the victorian area of this Christmas dream: hundreds of beautiful teddy bears are playing in a green grass area. Ten meters after them, we are approaching a bedroom where luxurious old fashioned porcelain dolls are sleeping in their cradle.

At the end of this path, we meet Santa Claus, sitting on a golden seat and waiting for our children to communicate their Christmas wish list to him.

A picture of Santa Claus holding our child on his laps closes this magical Christmas journey that reminds us the taste and the atmosphere of our own childhood. This fairy journey will also become our first Christmas memory of the year.

The second activity will be the Christmas decoration of our house and the Christmas tree. Is there a better Christmas activity than this one; which our children will remember when they will grow up and become parents? It will certainly give them the desire to perpetuate these traditions.

I remember the first time I decorated the Christmas tree with my mother and she told me to not to touch the flocking which simulated the snow because she thought that it would cut my fingers. I did not believe her… When my son helped me to decorate the Christmas tree for the first time, I told him not to touch the flocking and within one second, the taste and the atmosphere of my own childhood Christmas holidays came back to my memory.

When the tree and the house are decorated, we will install the crib that represents the Nativity scene. Children have not lost their primary instincts and the scene will usually be more secure than beautiful, as if they wanted to protect the baby Jesus twenty centuries after his birth. Let them install the Christmas crib while we supervise their work.

The scene of the nativity is also the opportunity to educate children about the birth of Jesus and the meaning of Christmas; and it is a fun way to learn history.

Another Christmas activity to share with our family is to walk on the streets to discover the gardens decorated with Santa Claus on his sleigh or climbing along the front of the houses, the lights on the municipal Christmas tree as well as participate in Christmas Events organized by the municipality.

After a long and tiring day, we will enjoy a warm evening by watching a Christmas movie with our children, drink hot chocolate and eat waffles or cookies.

These are some basic activities that will create, for us and our children, Christmas memories that will last for a lifetime.

Grandmas Fruitcake

November 16th, 2007

This is the recipe that my grandmother brought with her when she and her family left Russia in the early 1900″s.
As a child around 1920’s or so, while living on a farm in Pennsylvania which at that time there were a great amount of people who came from Europe, you needed to be able to do for yourself, she learned from her mother how to make a most delicious white fruit cake, a white fruitcake is a fruitcake that does not have any molasses, molasses which is very bitter, not having the molasses in the fruitcake gives it a lighter color, this gives it the name white fruitcake.

This fruitcake in the days in which my mother lived as a child with her parents this was only made during Christmas because the only time you could get walnuts, cherries, and some other ingredients was in the fall of the year, remember now they didn’t go to the store to buy what they needed, they had to grow them, raisins were dried by the people themselves, they even had to shell their own walnuts, and candy their own cherries, and such the pineapple and coconut I do believe they must have purchased.

To keep with tradition the only time of the year that I make or sell this fruitcake is during the Christmas holidays, and In my mind you cannot get a better fruitcake. Here we go now gather up your ingredients and set them on your table, all ingredients need to be at room temperature.

1 pound butter
12 eggs
1 lb. sugar
1 pound flour
1 pound white raisins
1 pound walnut meats
1 lb. red and green candied cherries
1 lb. bakers flaked coconut
1 lb. candies pineapple
1 tablespoon of baking soda dissolved in ¼ cup warm water
2 cups brandy–any brand

Soak the raisins, walnuts, cherries, coconut and pineapple with 2 cups brandy overnight in a stainless steel bowl.
In a 5 quart mixing bowl cream butter and sugar, then add eggs slowly, then add your flour and blend well, add the baking soda and water and mix a minute more, add all other ingredients and mix until well blended.
Now you are going to bake it in a 2 pound pan, or in the pan of your choice, foil or hard pan, line the pan with wax paper or baking paper or better yet a pan liner the size of the pan. For a 2 pound pan, Place 1 pound 12 ounces of the mixture in the pan and level it with a spoon, don’t bang it on the table. Bake it in a 350 degree preheated oven for 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, depends on your oven and how brown you want it.
It’s done when a pick is placed in the center and it comes out clean. Let it cool on a rack for a while and then sprinkle it with 1 ounce of brandy and then another ounce when it is cool and then pack it away for about 3 days in your refrigerator and then “enjoy it”.

The Importance Of Rest For Your Baby

November 16th, 2007

It is a fact of life that all living creatures need to rest in order to stay healthy and happy. Sleep is one of the necessary tools of survival just like eating and drinking. In order for the body and mind to perform at their best, a regular sleep routine is needed.

When we sleep, it gives not only your body, but your mind a rest as well. It is thought that sleep allows you to prepare for the next day and gives your brain an opportunity to sort things out. Though scientists aren’t precisely sure what type of organizing our brain does when we sleep. It is believed that during sleep your brain stores and sorts data, solves problems and replaces any chemicals that the rest of the body may need.

Different Babies May Have Different Sleeping Habits

The amount of sleep that a baby needs will depend on the baby herself. Age plays a large factor in how much sleep is needed, but nature plays a large part too. A newborn will sleep anywhere from 10 to 22 hours per day. This amount of sleep will decrease as the child grows.

If you have a baby that sleeps well, consider yourself lucky. For those less fortunate, there are things you can do as a parent that can get your baby on the right track to get the proper amount of sleep that she needs. Some babies are more active than others and will require less sleep, others are more laid back and are ready for a nap anytime, anywhere. Only you can determine the sleep needs of your child by observing behavior during the day. A child that needs more sleep will be cranky, clumsy and whiny without the proper amount of rest, while a child who needs less sleep will be ready to face the day with a smile and energy from the moment they awaken.

Teaching Your Baby Good Sleeping Habits

Though we may think that sleeping is as natural as breathing, it isn’t. If you have poor sleeping habits, your child may inadvertently pick up your bad rest habits. Usually by the time a baby reaches about 3 months of age they have developed a sleeping pattern. Most babies at this age have stopped their night feeding and this is an ideal time to begin training your baby for sleep. You must keep in mind that all babies develop at a different rate. If your child doesn’t seem ready for sleep training at this particular time, put it on the back burner and try it again in a couple of weeks.

When we say a baby sleeps through the night, we usually mean they are sleeping at stretches of 5-6 hours at a time. Some babies will sleep longer, some shorter. Once a child has reached the age of 6 months and is still waking for a nighttime feeding, it may be time to start night weaning.

Some babies sleep well through the night and then begin to wake up again. Don’t be alarmed, your baby may be missing you or she may be trying hard to master new skills that spill over into her rest and awaken her.

The best way to start healthy sleep habits at this age is to establish a regular bedtime as well as scheduled naps and stick to that schedule. You will notice signs of your baby becoming tired such as rubbing her eyes or pulling at her ears. You can also plan for specific nap times such as a nap after lunch feeding and one before the dinner feeding. Some people put their babies down two hours or so after they have last woken up. As long as you give your baby the opportunity to sleep, any approach you use should be fine.

Free Christmas Craft Idea For Kids

November 16th, 2007

Children like Christmas crafts a lot. Santa craft ideas for kids are a fun and relatively easy way to spend time with your children during the holiday season. Pick from a variety of our Christmas craft-decorating, free ideas.

SANTA PICTURE:
If you are looking for Christmas crafts and recipes geared for preschoolers, this picture-making activity is a good place to start. So, let’s begin creating Santa’s pictures from scratch. There are many different kinds of coloring books with Santa themes sold during Christmas. Get Santa’s picture from one of those books. Cut it out, and place Santa’s picture in the center of a sheet of thick, white construction paper. A glue stick will do fine to fasten it to the paper.

Color the picture with colored markers. Once the picture is finished, use cotton balls to serve as Santa’s beard, and one ball of cotton at the tip of his red hat. You can use black buttons to serve as Santa’s eyes and a red bead button for his nose. Decorate the rest of the area of the white paper by drawing candy canes or trees.

When the picture is finished, your children can sign their names right under Santa’s image. Take a piece of heavy cardboard and secure the picture to it. Put the picture in a frame to protect it. Place this frame in a memorable area of your house for all to look and admire.

SANTA CHRISTMAS CARDS:

Making Santa Christmas cards is another craft idea your kids will enjoy. Take a piece of white construction paper and measure the paper to a size of 5×7 inches. Cut the construction paper to that size. Fold the construction paper in half, either horizontally or vertically. Encourage your children to draw their own version of Santa on the front cover. Use crayons or colored markers.

After the picture is finished, your kids can write Christmas messages on the inside of the card. Homemade Christmas cards are wonderful to display in your home or send to relatives and friends. You can even add this to your Christmas craft-a-day calendar; it’s a great craft to do with your kids or students.

MAKE A SANTA PLATE ORNAMENT FOR THE CHRISTMAS TREE:

You’ll need crayons and markers; cotton balls, a dinner-sized paper plate, and color sparkles. Draw Santa, without his red cap, on the plate using the crayons or markers. Add the cotton balls for his beard. You can even glue the cotton balls into a V shape so that Santa’s beard hangs off the plate. The cotton balls can also be used for Santa’s hair, too.

Use a blue marker to color in Santa’s eyes, and a black marker to draw Santa’s glasses. Use red food color on a cotton ball to make Santa’s nose. You can color the rim of the plate with red or green and add color sparkles to it. Finally, place the Santa plate on the tree by inserting an ornament hook at the top of the plate.

As you can see, there are so many different ways to involve your kids in creating, making, and decorating Santa Christmas ornaments, pictures, and cards.

How To Make Sure Your Baby’s Birthday First Party Will Be A Roaring Hit

November 16th, 2007

While many of us look forward to a birthday party and we remember them, our 1st birthday first party is one event that we know of only from photographs and tales from our family members. You will find that most parents usually plan their baby’s first party with great care.

To make any type of birthday a success there are a few items that you will need to look into. These items are of especial care when you are planning a one year olds birthday first party. The party can otherwise become a nightmare if you plan of lots of elaborate events.

For this type of 1st birthday party you will need to keep things in the party simple. You will need to plan on having lots of finger foods and filling snacks that your guests can munch on as they socialize at the party. These foods can be an assortment of sandwiches, mini pizzas or lots of different pizzas, hot dogs and burgers, fries with tubs of different sauces.

You can have many bowls of sweets and desserts like ice cream, caramel, éclairs, chocolates and cakes all laid out on a buffet style table. To have your younger guests laughing with enjoyment at your baby’s birthday first party you should plan on having different party games like Elephant Walk, Water Balloon Toss, Pass the Bubbles among a variety of activities.

For added enjoyment you can have lots of brightly colored balloons, tinsels and streamers flying around the site of the birthday. As birthday cakes are just about everyone’s favorite food you should buy a couple of large sized cakes in bright colors that has lots of icing all around it. The kids will love choosing a big piece of cake that is smothered in icing and you will see lots of sticky fingers and icing covered smiles wherever you look.

When you are looking at the different types of birthday cakes that you can buy for a birthday first party, you will see clowns, teddy bears, Scooby-Doo, My Little Pony, a fireman, a spaceman and even animal shaped cakes. These are just a few of the cakes that you can buy for your baby’s first birthday.

Now even though your baby is too young to understand and enjoy all of these activities that are going on you can plan on making the birthday first party that you are hosting a success with everyone else.

The way to achieve this is by seeing that everyone has plenty of food and drinks, lots of fun games and activities to take part in and the kids have goody bags that are filled to the brim with toys and sweets. Kids Are Americans Too

November 16th, 2007

A timely new book explores the rights that American kids have. What rights they do-and don’t-have may surprise you.

A look at those rights can be found in “Kids Are Americans Too,” written by four-time No. 1 best-selling author and veteran television news journalist Bill O’Reilly. His first book for younger fans, “The O’Reilly Factor for Kids,” was the No. 1 best-selling nonfiction title for kids in 2005.

Back again with a dialogue on rights that may spark many discussions, O’Reilly and his co-author Charles Flowers dole out the kind of blunt, commonsense commentary you count on them for. Together, they explore questions being debated in and out of courts today, including:

• Can a kid wear an anti-gay T-shirt on campus?

• Does a school newspaper have the right to bad-mouth a principal?

• Does a mother have the right to eavesdrop on her daughter’s telephone conversations?

Some of the answers may surprise you, and all of them are likely to make you think.

Bill O’Reilly, a two-time Emmy Award winner for excellence in reporting, served as a national correspondent for ABC News and anchor of the nationally syndicated news magazine program “Inside Edition” before becoming executive producer and anchor of “The O’Reilly Factor.”

He is the author of “The O’Reilly Factor,” “The No Spin Zone,” “Who’s Looking Out for You?,” “The O’Reilly Factor for Kids,” “Culture Warrior” and the novel “Those Who Trespass,” and holds master’s degrees from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and Boston University.

Charles Flowers, award-winning author or co-author of 62 books, has also written television documentaries, magazine articles, art and theater criticism, and opinion columns in such publications as The New York Times, The Virginia Quarterly Review, and City Newspaper.

A former newspaper reporter, high school teacher and university professor, he wrote the screenplay for the feature film “The Nation” and, with composer Sorrel Hays, the three-act opera “Our Giraffe.”

The Greatest Love - Finding Your Personal Power

November 16th, 2007

As I’m sitting down to write this article Whitney Houston is crooning about “The Greatest Love of All” (I want to say it’s the radio but sadly, I’m playing her Greatest Hits CD… I’m a sucker for a feel good song) and it’s triggered some thoughts for me. Whitney is specifically referring to the love we have for ourselves as the greatest love of all, but what does that mean exactly? We’ve all heard the old adage “you can’t really love others until you love yourself” and yet most of us struggle, in real life terms, with being comfortable saying (out loud) “I love me!”

In The Secret Bob Proctor portrays the idea of loving yourself by enthusiastically kissing his own hand! What does it feel like to be THAT sure of who you are? I can tell you right now… it feels fabulous! It’s been a crazy journey to get to where I am today but I can honestly tell you that I love who I am, I’m proud of the woman I’ve become and I’ve earned this feeling. It came through blood sweat and MANY tears. But it is SO worth it. I wouldn’t change one single part of that journey. I am truly alive everyday of my life.

Katrina (Wilton – Co-Founder of Glow Health & Wellness) and I attended a Leadership workshop in 2002 where we took part in an exercise about discovering your ‘personal power’, it was challenging and frightening and it went something like this… One by one we took turns at standing up in front of the entire group and we had to yell as loudly and strongly as possible a phrase starting with ‘I am’. It had to be something relevant for us and we had to stick with that word and keep yelling until such time as the group unanimously clapped us to sit down. If even one of them wasn’t convinced then we had to keep going. How did they measure they’re conviction? Goosebumps. Yep that’s right… goosebumps. When you come from your true place of personal power, you can really feel it and, so can those around you.

Why do I tell you this story? To invite you to step up to your own personal power. Too often I see people living luke warm lives and believing that’s all there is to it. They stop expecting things to be different because they don’t know HOW to change them. We don’t always have the answers, we don’t always know the ‘how’ (honestly, we RARELY know the answers), but that’s the joy of life! Go out there and find the answers. Don’t do your best – DO WHATEVER IT TAKES. Being happy is worth it.

The Most Powerful Love Languages for Your Children

October 26th, 2007

Children are the most precious gifts bestowed upon all parents. Whether you have just given birth to a new born baby or have recently watched your youngest child blissfully exchanging her wedding vows, there still lies in you desires to continue loving and caring for your children despite how “mature” they will grow to be over the years.

Through the passage of time, much research and development have taken place in the area of parenting and motherhood. We can readily observe that the way which our parents loved us as compared to the love shown by couples whom have just embraced their new born in this new millennium does vary to some extent.

In recent years, many publications of parenting and motherhood have greatly encouraged the speaking of positive words to our children. Positive words such as “You are such a good girl”, “Thank you for helping mommy”, “It’s okay boy, you will get it right the next time”, “Daddy and mommy love you very much”, and so on. For some of us, these words were rarely spoken to us in the past by our parents.

In the older days, there were not much parenting resources where our parents could learn from. Needless to say, not much was being talked about on the positive way of communicating to a child. Since most of us have grown up in such environment, many parents today find it hard to adopt a better and more positive communication method.

The good news is that it is never too late to begin nurturing your child’s mental and emotional aspects through positive and encouraging words. Much psychological research have shown that children who grew up listening to parents’ praises, compliments, and positive words tend to learn faster and develop better self esteem, an essential factor that gives your child the capability to achieve his or her fullest potentials in later years.

A good step to begin with is to start praising your children when praises are due to them. Whenever your children obey instructions or simply lend their helping hand, a timely praise will encourage them to repeat the pleasing behaviors. However, do not overly praise your children as pride will set in soon after. So, when do we draw the line between timely praises and praises that are exaggerated? Well, just ensure that you praise your child on a behavior or action that makes you proud. Do not give praises on every single behavior which you approve of. Praising is undoubtedly one of the most powerful love languages for your children.

Each child wants to know that he or she is unique and special to their parents. This message is best communicated by telling your children their unique talents and abilities. Assuring statements such as “You play the piano really well”, “You are such a great artist”, “I love to watch you dance, and you dance really well”, “Congratulations, you did well for your mathematics exams again”, and so forth. Such statements not only affirm your children but also boost their self-esteem substantially. This indeed is another powerful love language for your children.

How about speaking something positive to your children when they make you upset? It’s never easy especially when the undesirable behavior is repeated overtime; all you want is an immediate “time out”. Being parents as we all know, demand much of patience to be slow to anger. The next time you are tempted to yell and scold your children, try speaking something positive first before teaching them. Statements like “You are a good girl, but when you beat your little brother, it upsets mommy, it hurts him and that is not right”, “Dad and mom loves you very much, but when you choose not to do your school work, we get upset and you must learn to be responsible”, “Danny is a good boy, but when you throw your food everywhere, mom will have to clear the mess, mom is very unhappy about it”, and so on. You will be surprised how quickly your children learn the right behavior when you reprimand them by speaking positive words prior to pinpointing the wrong behavior. This is yet another powerful love language for your children.

Like adults, every child wants to live in a home where love, warmth and affection abound. Take some time to adjust your communication style with your children. The more you communicate positive love languages to your children, the happier and healthier your children will grow to be. Isn’t this what every parent want for their children? Ultimately, nothing satisfy you more than an enjoyable journey with your children knowing that they too will pass on the love languages to their future heritage; your grand children to come.
